Drywall installation in Menorca since 2004, with 6,000+ projects delivered: false ceilings from €29/m², partitions, wall linings and 50 dB+ acoustic insulation using Placo BA13/BA15, Knauf and Lafarge systems. Fixed quote in 24 h.

Introduction

What is drywall (pladur) and how does it work?

Drywall is a laminated plasterboard (PYL) used as a dry construction system for interiors and regulated by the UNE-EN 520 standard. “Pladur” is a registered trademark of Saint-Gobain Placo that has become the generic term in Spain, alongside gypsum board or cartón-yeso.

Core

High-purity gypsum

Thickness

10 · 12,5 · 15 mm

Weight

8–12 kg/m²

Execution

5–10 days / 50 m²

Each board has a high-purity gypsum core encased between two treated cardboard liners. Gypsum provides rigidity, insulation and fire resistance; cardboard adds tensile strength and supports the final finish. Weight ranges from 8 to 12 kg/m² depending on thickness (10, 12.5 or 15 mm).

Installation fixes galvanised steel tracks and studs to the existing floor, ceiling and walls. Boards are screwed to the framework every 25 cm, joints are taped and filled, and the surface is sanded flat ready to paint or tile. No wet work, no debris, average execution of 5–10 days per 50 m² refurbishment.

Reference brands: Placo, Knauf and Lafarge

In the Spanish market there are three major manufacturers of laminated plasterboard systems:

Saint-Gobain Placo (Pladur®)

Spanish manufacturer with the broadest technical range. Its BA13 (12.5 mm) and BA15 (15 mm) boards are the most widely used in residential false ceilings and partitions, certified to UNE-EN 520.

Knauf

German manufacturer with W11 and D112 systems certified for acoustic insulation above 50 dB and fire resistance up to EI-120 with double fire-rated board.

Lafarge

Holcim group brand with Prégy boards and systems used in new-build and refurbishment projects in Spain, certified to UNE-EN 520 and CTE-DB-SI.

Board types by application

The versatility of the drywall system is largely due to the variety of boards available. Each type has specific additives that give it different properties:

Standard Board (A / BA)

General use

General use in partitions and interior ceilings in dry areas. It is the most affordable and the most widely used. Available in 10, 12.5 and 15 mm thicknesses.

Moisture-Resistant Board (H / Green)

Wet areas

Treated with moisture-resistant additives to cope with humidity and water vapour. Mandatory in bathrooms, kitchens and any wet area. Recognisable by its green colour.

Fire-Resistant Board (F / DF / Pink)

Fire resistance

Contains glass fibres in the gypsum core to resist fire. Enables partitions classified as EI-30, EI-60, EI-90 or EI-120 depending on the number of layers and thickness.

Acoustic Board (AC)

Acoustic insulation

Higher density for improved airborne sound insulation. Used together with mineral wool to achieve acoustic reduction figures above 50 dB.

Advantages

Why choose drywall over traditional masonry?

Drywall outperforms traditional brick or concrete-block work on four measurable factors: execution time, waste generation, impact on daily life and total project cost. Any objective comparison points the same way.

In Menorca the difference is critical: most projects run in occupied flats, holiday-let apartments between seasons or commercial premises. A refurbishment with traditional work takes 3–6 weeks; the same job with drywall is delivered in 5–10 days.

Weight is decisive: the old slabs in central Maó were not sized for new masonry loads. A brick partition weighs 120–180 kg/m² against just 25–40 kg/m² for an equivalent drywall partition. That difference allows space redistribution in buildings where masonry is off the table.

Drywall finishes beat rendering and plastering on flatness. A well-installed and treated board delivers a surface with no waves, accepting any paint, wallpaper or coating with no added prep. Flatness tolerance below 2 mm per UNE-EN 520.

"Laminated plasterboard must comply with the UNE-EN 520 standard, which sets out the requirements for mechanical strength, fire behaviour and dimensional tolerances. Complete partition and wall-lining systems must be tested according to the applicable UNE-EN standards to certify their acoustic, thermal and fire resistance performance."

Methodology

Our step-by-step process

From the on-site survey to final handover, a clear process with no surprises.

01

On-site survey

A technician visits your home or premises in Menorca, assesses the project, takes laser measurements and answers technical questions on boards (BA13, moisture-resistant, fire-rated) and insulation.

Available Monday to Friday across the island
02

Detailed quote within 24h

Fixed quote in €/m² with a breakdown of boards (Placo, Knauf or Lafarge), metal framing, insulation and labour. Closed timeline from day one. The final price does not change.

03

Clean, professional installation

The team protects floors, furniture and adjacent areas with sheets and plastic. No wet work, debris is kept to a minimum and dust is vacuumed at the point of board cutting.

Full protection of the work area
04

Delivery with a perfect finish

Ready to paint: joints treated with compound and fibre tape, surfaces sanded to 120 grit and corners reinforced with metal corner beads. End-of-job cleaning included.

Ready to paint or tile

1-year warranty. All works include a 1-year workmanship warranty: any issue that arises during that period is resolved at no extra cost. Materials keep the factory warranty of Placo, Knauf or Lafarge (typically 10 years on board).

The main ones are: standard board (A/BA) for general use, moisture-resistant board (H, green) for bathrooms and kitchens, fire-rated board (F/DF, pink) with EI-30 to EI-120 classification, acoustic board (AC) of high density for sound insulation, and high-hardness board (AD/Impact) for high-traffic areas. The choice depends on the use, applicable regulations and the conditions of the space.

In Spain, the three reference brands are Saint-Gobain Placo (Pladur®, which has given the generic name to the system), Knauf and Lafarge. All three meet UNE-EN 520 and offer equivalent performance in standard board. Differences appear in special technical systems (acoustic, high-rating fire-resistant), where each manufacturer has proprietary solutions.

Yes, with suitable fixings. For light objects up to 5 kg (pictures, small mirrors) drywall-specific plugs (Fischer HM or similar) are enough. For medium loads of 10-30 kg (shelves, televisions) expansion anchors of the Toggler or Molly type are used. For heavy loads (fitted wardrobes, boilers, wall-hung sanitaryware) the metal frame is reinforced with additional studs and cross-rails before fitting the board. This reinforcement is planned during the technical visit.

Yes, but always after applying a coat of sealer primer. Drywall has a porous surface that absorbs paint unevenly if not primed first: some areas stay matt and others satin, producing a patchy finish. We leave the work with joints treated (filler and tape) and surfaces sanded, ready for the painting team to prime and paint.

Yes, and it is one of the greatest strengths of the system. As a dry installation there is no bulky rubble, no heavy construction dust and no odour. We section off the home with protective plastic, work in one area and leave the rest free. A living-room false ceiling (20 m²) can be installed in one day with the client at home. For multi-day renovations we coordinate schedules with the owner.

Electrical, plumbing, ventilation and HVAC services are routed through the cavity created by the metal frame before closing with board. We coordinate with the electrician and plumber so cables and pipes are left set out in their final position. In false ceilings, accessible junction boxes are installed and REBT separations are respected. Switches and sockets are recessed with a universal drywall box (KU68 type).

The main ones are: impact screwdriver with depth-limiting clutch (to avoid tearing the paper), shears or knife for cutting boards, a carpenter's plane for chamfers, 10-40 cm trowels for fillers, sanding pad with 120-220 grit, self-levelling laser for ceiling set-out, and snips for metal framing. All the equipment is professional and we bring it ourselves; the client does not need to provide anything.
